Jesus spoke these prophetic words in Matthew 25: 36, "...I was sick and you looked after me..." The recent economic crisis is escalating an already growing problem of global and national poverty. What should be done to help the poor? There are over two thousand scriptures touching the subject of poverty. These many texts reveal that God takes an uncompromising position for the poor to be dealt with in a merciful fashion through benevolence and economic justice. The War ,Peace, and Nonviolence Issues Group of the SGPI exists to collect and disseminate relevant information from around the world so that we might pray for God's guidance as we advance the causes of peace and justice. We shall pray for God's wisdom; we shall pray for those working for peace; and, following the call of Matthew 5.44, we shall pray for the enemies of peace, that they might be transformed by God's love and come face-to-face with the peace that surpasses all understanding. Scripture commands us to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of all. As Isaiah 58:9-11 states: If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Let us pray for the rights of all, and that our own eyes be opened to see all as our brothers and sisters. Genesis 2:15 tells us "And the Lord God took the man, and put him in the garden of Eden to till and to keep it." We invite you to join us in global prayer for preservation of God's creation, to care for it and preserve it for our children and all subsequent generations. We were instructed to be good stewards, to till the land and the seas, to reap their rewards; to renew our natural resources, not rapaciously destroy them. Let us pray for the wisdom and the courage to preserve our natural resources.
